Maurice Sendak turns 83 today. He was born in Brooklyn, NY in 1928. He gained international acclaim after writing and illustrating Where the Wild Things Are in 1963 for which he won the 1964 Caldecott Medal. Prior to Wild Things, he was best known for illustrating Else Holmelund Minarik's Little Bear series.He's had a prolific career beginning with his commission to illustrate Atomics for the Millions by Dr. Maxwell Leigh Eidinoff in 1947.
