Free eBook for March

The University of Chicago Press is offering, for free, the e-book edition of Pilgrimage to the End of the World: the road to Santiago de Compostela by Conrad Rudolph during the month of March.

Spring is the season for a pilgrimage, observed Chaucer. The March e-book traces the famous Camino de Santiago—the Way of St. James—a pilgrimage route from La Puy in France, through the Pyrenees, to Santiago de Compostela in northwestern Spain. It’s a route followed by millions from medieval times to the present (and was also followed by Martin Sheen in the 2010 film, The Way.) Rudolph’s book is at once travel guide, literary work, historical study, and memoir.
“Part meditation and part (very practical) guide, the book describes an often rigorous but also captivating journey—surreal, mysterious, timeless—into another time and place. Beautifully written with rich anecdotes and truly profound insights, this lovely book is an homage to the spiritual art of walking. For as Rudolph notes, ‘the journey really is the goal.’”—Chicago Tribune
