Murder in Ancient China: Two Judge Dee Mysteries free during January

The University of Chicago Press is offering the e-book, Murder in Ancient China: Two Judge Dee Mysteries by Robert Van Gulik, for free during the month of January.

Robert Hans van Gulik was a highly educated orientalist, diplomat, musician (of the guqin, a plucked seven-string Chinese musical instrument of the zither family) and writer, best known for the Judge Dee mysteries, the protagonist of which he borrowed from the 18th century Chinese detective novel Dee Goong An.

In Murder in Ancient China’s first story, we watch as Judge Dee attempts to solve the mystery of an elderly poet murdered by moonlight in his garden pavilion; in the second, set on the eve of the Chinese New Year, the Judge makes two rare mistakes—will peril result?

The free e-book is available on UCP website DRM-free in your choice of an EPUB file, as well as in a PRC file. The EPUB format is the best choice for e-reading devices like Nooks, iPads, and the Sony Reader, and on mobile devices using e-reader apps like Bluefire and Aldiko. The PRC format can be loaded on Kindle e-readers or used with Kindle apps.

Happy reading,

  1. Thanks, Angela, I'm going to give this a try since my Kiddo just got a job teaching Chinese culture. I am going to pass this on to her, as well.
