Since When Is Literacy Not an Asset?

NPR recently did a story on a dilapidated bookmobile in Lydonville, VT. It seems the Cobleigh Public Library cannot afford to fix it's bookmobile. What's most tragic about it is that the preschoolers at a local day care are missing it the most. For now, thanks to the librarians bringing them books in their own cars, they still get some access to books. But it's not the same.
"Some in the town feel the bookmobile has served its purpose and has become a financial burden instead of an asset."
I'd like to know, since when is literacy NOT an asset? I wish I was financially able to help, but I can't. Maybe (I hope and pray) someone can make sure this isn't the final chapter for the bookmobile. Check out the story here.

That's all I got for now. Talk to you soon.

  1. Thanks for sharing this story. I wish I had money to help this cause- but it is something to think about. Sharing the news helps, too! :)
